THE Railway Preservation Society of Ireland has released details of its first two major railtours for the first half of 2019.
First up is the ‘West Awake’ (a play on the well-known song The West’s Awake, by The Dubliners) diesel tour on Saturday, April 13, which, like the previous diesel-hauled railtours, is a fundraiser for the overhaul of the society’s General Motors locomotives Nos. 141 and 134.
The tour will originate at Dublin Connolly at 07.50 and head west to Athlone, then take the line to Claremorris and Manulla Junction, where it will branch north to Ballina.
After a short break to allow the locomotives to run round, the train will return to Claremorris and then out to Westport. A further stop will be made here before the tour makes its way back to Dublin, arriving back at Connolly around 21.00.
