Stanier pair celebrate Conwy Valley reopening

NETWORK Rail and Transport for Wales Rail Services hosted a special main line steam trip on August 3 to celebrate the reopening of the Conwy Valley line in North Wales.

‘The Conwy Quest’, double-headed by West Coast Railways’ Stanier ‘8F’ No. 48151 and ‘Jubilee’ No. 45690 Leander, ran from Chester to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

West Coast Railways’ ‘8F’ No. 48151 has had a busy few weeks in the run up to the expiry of its boiler ticket. Two days after visiting North Wales to celebrate the reopening of the Conwy Valley Line, it slogs up the final few yards towards Ais Gill summit on the Settle to Carlisle line with the return leg of the August 6 ‘Dalesman’ from Chester to Carlisle. At Llandudno Junction there was a pause for the reopening ceremony, where a Welsh orthodox priest performed a blessing, before the train headed up the valley.
