Doncaster’s £14m iPort terminal opens for rail traffic

SEPTEMBER 18 saw the first revenue-earning freight service arrive at the £14million iPort terminal at Rossington, near Doncaster.

GB Railfreight’s No. 66752 The Hoosier State hauled the inaugural 05.07 Southampton Western Docks-Doncaster iPort intermodal train and 18.04 return.

The train is booked to run five days per week and is currently the only train scheduled to serve the 30-acre site, close to the M18 and A1(M) motorways.

However, the terminal’s rail sidings are designed to handle up to six 750m trains per day, six days a week, and has storage capacity for up to 1,500 TEU (20ft equivalent units).

The site has been designed to meet the necessary security standards for international traffic and is within two hours of the ports at Hull and Immingham.

It will also provide easy road access to a wide swathe of South and West Yorkshire, Humberside and Lincolnshire.

iPort Rail managing director Steve Freeman said: “We’re really proud of the facilities. We want to build up the services here and are looking forward to working closely with GB Railfreight to link iPort Rail with other sea ports and logistics hubs around the country.”
