THE South Devon Railway (SDR) has released further details of its plans to completely overhaul and/or replace the workshop and maintenance facilities at Buckfastleigh.
Planning applications have been submitted to Teignbridge District Council for the next two phases of the site development, the first of which is for the new restoration hub building.
This will incorporate a new carriage and wagon workshop, which the SDR says is urgently needed to provide more suitable working space for carriage overhaul and maintenance.

A less-traditional approach has been taken with the building’s external design, with a more contemporary look adopted, along with the modern name.
The SDR’s logic behind the design is largely based on the fact its location will be outside the daily operational area of the railway and thus provides a direct backdrop to the public areas, while at the same time providing a screen to the working areas and the current workshop building.
