SECRETARY of State for Transport Chris Grayling has approved Network Rail’s plan to construct a new junction burrowing under the East Coast Main Line (ECML) at Werrington, just north of Peterborough.
The junction is part of a package of improvements designed to increase capacity on the ECML.

It will allow freight and local passenger trains to gain access to and from the former Great Northern Railway route to Lincoln via Spalding and Sleaford without conflicting with ECML expresses.

A new tunnel will link the former Midland lines towards Stamford, on the western side of the ECML, with the Spalding route.
It is specifically aimed at reducing the need for Felixstowe-bound intermodal trains to weave across the ECML fast lines between Werrington Junction and the Peterborough to Ely line.
