The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an extra special steam gala this weekend.
Running 21 September to 24 September, 2023, the steam gala marks 50 years since the first passenger service on the NYMR.
Up to 12 locomotives will be in steam over the course of the weekend, including some special guests. Services will be calling at Pickering, Levisham, Newtondale Halt (by request), Goathland, Grosmont and Whitby stations.

The first guest, LNER A4 pacific locomotive ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ in BR Blue livery, will arrive on Thursday and be in action from Friday to Sunday. The second guest locomotive is the Great Central Railway and David Clarke Railway Trust’s BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 No. 92214. Also visiting are No. 75069 and Caledonian Railway 2P No. 55189 courtesy of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society.
These guests will join the home fleet of: BR 9F No. 92134, SR Railway Schools Class No.926 ‘Repton’, Black 5 Eric Treacy No. 5428, Lucie No. 8, BR Standard 4 Tank No. 80136, J27 No. 65894, and Peggy No. 29.
Several other activities will also be on over the weekend along the line. The Annual Steam Gala Beer Festival returns with a selection of real ales from local breweries at Goathland Station offering a wide selection of real ales from local breweries.
There will be live music from Time is Tight at Goathland Station on Saturday evening and Station Tea Rooms and Levisham Tea Hut will be open for refreshments.
Plus, Scarborough and District Railway Modellers return to NYMR. They will be in the Learning Centre on Platform 2 at Pickering Station, exhibiting a number of layouts in the popular 00 and N gauge scales, showing what has been happening in the hobby over recent years – including sound and digital control to name but a few. Entrance to the models is only £1 and accompanied children are free.
