NETWORK Rail took advantage of the four-day Easter weekend to undertake engineering work at more than 200 sites across the country.
More than 13,000 staff worked on a range of projects, from the Ordsall Chord in Manchester to smaller improvements such as the completion of a new passenger subway at Hackney Wick, in east London.
Other major projects included continuing work to prepare for Crossrail, both on the Great Eastern lines east of London and west of the capital on the Great Western Main Line; a £15million rebuild of Bath Spa station to realign the track and construct wider and longer platforms (pictured); and work at Charing Cross, Cannon Street and London Bridge to prepare for the introduction of more frequent Thameslink services.
At London Waterloo, a £4m upgrade to track and pointwork was completed as part of the £800m project to add five extra platforms and increase capacity by 30% in 2018.
