Whitwell & Reepham ‘Thursday Gang’ nears end of Agecroft No. 3 restoration

ROBERT Stephenson & Hawthorns 0-4-0ST Agecroft No. 3 (7681/1951) is in the final stages of restoration at Whitwell & Reepham Station in Norfolk.

The locomotive is one of a trio that worked at Agecroft power station, near Manchester, until September 1981, and has been the subject of a ‘nut-and-bolt’ restoration by three Whitwell volunteers known as the Thursday Gang.

The project has been on-going for the past four years, which has seen the run-down loco completely rebuilt in the open air.

This recent photograph of RSH 0-4-0ST Agecroft No. 3 shows just how close the Whitwell & Reepham restoration is to completion. ADY MATHERSOLE

Work done to date includes the removal, stripping, refurbishment and refitting of all components from the wheels up, including wheelsets, axles and valve gear.

Brakes and brake linkages (including a full overhaul of the steam brake) have been similarly treated.
