NETWORK Rail has replaced switches and crossings at Southerham Junction, near Lewes, which controls access to the Seaford branch.
New signalling equipment was also installed between Lewes and Seaford during the closure.
The work took place over the weekend of January 19-20.
Once commissioned, the equipment will be controlled from Three Bridges Railway Operating Centre (ROC), leading to the closure of traditional signalboxes at Lewes, Newhaven Town and Newhaven Harbour.
Further improvements to the area’s rail infrastructure means three times as many trains will use the diversionary route via Lewes during disruption on the Brighton Main Line.
NR also says sidings at Newhaven Marine will be upgraded to support a possible freight connection in the future.
