‘Griffins’ leased from Newag for Polish Intercity services

POLISH Intercity operator PKP IC has leased two ‘Griffin’ electric locos from Polish manufacturer Newag. and will use them until December to replace older class EP09 locos, which are being overhauled by Newag.

The two PKP IC ‘Griffins’ are part of an order for five placed in 2015 by freight operator Lotos Kolej and ING Lease, which were not delivered because of delays and approval problems.

Newag launched the ‘Griffin’ locomotive in 2012 and so far has only built the prototype plus these five locos.

Newag has leased the other three locos to freight operator Orlen Koltrans, which mostly operate oil trains belonging to the Orlen energy company.

Newag has won a tender to supply 20 four-axle locos, based on the ‘Griffin’, to PKP IC (beating Chinese firm CRRC and Polish rival Pesa), but the contract has not yet been signed.
