Progress in motion on Llangollen ‘Patriot’

NEW-BUILD Fowler ‘Patriot’ No. 5551 The Unknown Warrior had some of its motion trial fitted for the LMS-Patriot Project’s members’ day at the Llangollen Railway on July 8.

Supporters of the locomotive were given the opportunity to see the 4-6-0’s left side in as near complete condition as possible, with much of that side’s valve gear in place.

Both coupling rods, the connecting rod and the crosshead were in place, with the drop link, combination lever and radius rod also fitted.

There was no cladding on the cylinder, but the exhibition-finish stainless steel cylinder end covers were in situ.

The ‘Patriot’s’ right-hand side coupling rods had also been fitted, and members had the opportunity to view some of the other ancillary components as well as the loco’s tender frames, which are assembled and awaiting riveting.
