On display will be a selection of Gresley’s letters and notebooks and a number of his personal artefacts such as his hat and passport to tell the story of Gresley’s life.

As well as celebrating Gresley, the exhibition will also bring to light some of the lesser known people of Doncaster who helped to build the locomotives.

The exhibition takes place exactly 100 years after Flying Scotsman starred at the opening of the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley Stadium, helping launch the locomotive to worldwide fame.

Chairman of the Gresley Society, Philip Benham, said: “One hundred years on from the event that first thrust the world’s most famous locomotive into the limelight, it is fitting to see the achievements of Flying Scotsman’s creator commemorated in this wonderful exhibition.

“It is all the more appropriate that it is being held in Doncaster, where so many of Gresley’s achievements took place.”

The exhibition will be held in the Danum Gallery Library and Museum between April 23 and September 21.
