Exbury extension opened

THE 12¼in gauge Exbury Gardens Railway in Hampshire, formally opened its expanded circuit (RM March p80) on April 11.

The line now runs for about 1½ miles including a new section around a wildlife lake, with trains stopping at Dragonfly Halt. Part of the original, smaller circuit has been closed and the track lifted.

The official opening train for invited guests draws into the new Dragonfly Halt, hauled by 2-6-2 Mariloo (Exmoor 326/2008) on April 11. In charge, is EGR-qualified driver Marie Louise Agius, ‘Mr Leo’s’ great niece, the loco being named after her grandmother. PETER NICHOLSON

The ceremony was conducted by Lionel de Rothschild, nephew of the railway’s founder, the late Leopold de Rothschild. The guest of honour was TV presenter Dan Snow who made a speech and unveiled the new station name board.

Public trains had been serving the halt since the beginning of the season on March 20.
