‘Deltic’ charity tour commemorate ‘Tees-Tyne Pullman’

by

To mark the 75th anniversary of the ‘Tees-Tyne Pullman’, The Railway Magazine has joined forces with Pathfinder Tours to run a recreation of the 1970s service, raising money for charity with a train that will use blue and grey Mk.2 carriages very similar to those used around 50 years ago.

55009 ‘Alycidon’ heads the 5Z55 Carnforth Steamtown to Carlisle past Scout Green on the 29 Mar 23. WCRC’s 57012 is on the rear of the train.

The charities being supported are the Martin House Children’s Hospice in Wetherby and Prostate Cancer UK.

‘Our’ train on Wednesday, September 27 (the actual anniversary of the first Tees-Tyne Pullman) will be hauled by the Deltic Preservation Society’s No. 55009 Alycidon (subject to availability), so expect an exhilarating run and speeds in the upper-90s, plus over 500 miles of haulage behind a locomotive synonymous with the East Coast route. To ensure you have a souvenir of the memorable day, a photo stop is planned.

British Railways launched the ‘Tees-Tyne Pullman’ in the autumn of 1948, aimed at business travellers from Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Darlington (Tees) going to London in the morning, with a late afternoon/evening return north.

Initially operated by former LNER Pacific steam locos hauling Pullman carriages, by the early-1970s it was formed of Mk.2s hauled by a 3300hp ‘Deltic’. The service was withdrawn in 1976 when new InterCity 125 trains (HSTs) began to take over East Coast Main Line services.

The ‘Tees-Tyne Commemorative’ will consist of a mix of Standard, First Class and Premier Dining priced to suit all budgets, although seating in each class is limited and so early booking is recommended. Premier Dining is priced at £309 (£289 age 5-16) or £1216 for a party of four; First Class (including a £6 buffet voucher) is £195 adult/£175 junior and £760 for a party of four; Standard Class is £139 adult/£99 junior or £536 for a party of four. There is a £50 per person supplement at guaranteed tables for two.
