‘B1’ and 76084 pair up for ‘Whitby Flyer’ from York


STANDARD 4MT 2-6-0 No. 76084’s main line comeback will continue on March 18 when it works the Railway Touring Company’s ‘Whitby Flyer’ excursion from York with ‘B1’ 4-6-0 No. 61264.

The two mixed traffic locomotives will depart the Yorkshire city at 08.30 and head first for Darlington, picking up at Thirsk (09.20) and Northallerton (09.35), before heading across country via Middlesbrough to reverse at Battersby and take the scenic Esk Valley line.

Arrival in Whitby is expected at 13.15, with plenty of time for fish and chips on the harbour front before the return leg departs at 16.30. The train retraces its steps via Northallerton (set down 18.45) and Thirsk (19.00) and is due back at York at 20.00.

Fares start at £99, rising to £249 for premier dining. A buffet car will be included in the train providing drinks, snacks and light refreshments for standard and first class passengers.

No. 76084 returned to the main line on the North Norfolk Railway’s Cromer shuttles last summer, and was expected to have hauled its first long-distance charter with No. 45690 Leander on February 25’s ‘Buxton Spa Express’.
