Royal honour for GNR(I) Merlin

GREAT Northern Railway (Ireland) ‘V’ class 4-4-0 No. 85 Merlin was given the honour of hauling a special Royal Train carrying Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh during their two-day visit to Northern Ireland.

The 1932-built locomotive, which is in the care of the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland, was adorned with the royal coat of arms as it hauled the five-coach train of RPSI stock from Coleraine to Bellarena where Her Majesty officially opened the new station platforms – part of Translink’s £46.4million Coleraine to Derry/Londonderry renewal project.
