THE sight of a Peppercorn Pacific on a quintessential GWR branch line may have been an incongruous one, but the visit of No. 60163 Tornado to the Bodmin & Wenford Railway between May 31 and June 4 was the Cornish line’s most successful event to date.
Tornado was confined to the Bodmin General-Bodmin Parkway section owing to its weight, but some 4,300 passengers enjoyed top-and-tailed services over the 3½-mile line with ‘8750’ 0-6-0PT No. 4612 working at the Parkway end of the trains.
An estimated 7,000 visitors in all came to see the Eastern interloper, seen here passing Charlie’s Gate shortly after leaving Bodmin Parkway on May 31. BARRY BATEMAN
