IT HAS been confirmed former BR Class 04 No. D2289 has been secured for preservation in the UK, following several weeks of speculation.
No. D2289 has been bought from Lonato S.p.A. and ends 46 years affiliation of ex-BR locos sold to steel-processing companies in the northern Italian town of Brescia.
The loco was built in 1960 by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns at Darlington and sub-contracted from Drewry (builders’ Nos. 8122/Drewry 2669). It was allocated to 70D Eastleigh all of its BR working life until withdrawal in September 1971. It was one of only a few 04s which received BR blue livery.
It was sold via P Wood (Shipbreakers) Queenborough in April 1972, and exported in a batch of similar locos to metal-processing firms in the Brescia area.
