GERMAN state operator DB started introducing its fleet of new Bombardier-built ‘Twindexx’ double-deck EMUs (German classes 445.0 and 446) in several parts of Germany from December 2017.
The trains are being used by DB Regio to replace loco-operated push-pull trains; in some cases some of the more modern double-deck coaches previously used will be incorporated in the new EMU trains.
Delivery of the Class 445.0 and 446 double-deck power cars (the number of intermediate coaches can be varied) had been delayed by up to three years because of ongoing safety case approval issues.

The first Class 445.0 train entered service from Kiel, in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, where 32 Class 445.0 vehicles (forming 16 four-car EMUs) will be based; these will all carry the Schleswig-Holstein regional green & grey livery rather than the familiar DB traffic red.
