Steam enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike are being offered the chance to step into a childhood dream this summer, as the Llangollen and Corwen Railway unveils its Ultimate Full-Day Steam Driver Experience on Monday 1 June.
This exclusive, immersive event, limited to just six participants, is far more than a taster session. It is a true, start-to-finish working day on the railway, giving guests the rare opportunity to become part of a real steam crew and experience every aspect of heritage railway operation. The new experience has been launched after the steam footplate experiences at the railway completely sold out.
From the moment the day begins, participants will step behind the scenes and onto the footplate, taking part in the vital early morning preparation that brings a steam locomotive to life. As the pressure builds and the engine awakens, guests will be guided by experienced crew through the skills and teamwork required to operate these iconic machines.

Throughout the day, participants will drive, fire and guard a steam train, working to a live timetable along the breathtaking Dee Valley line between Llangollen and Glyndyfrdwy. The experience includes multiple return journeys, offering plenty of time on the regulator and shovel, as well as the chance to fully appreciate the rhythm and responsibility of railway life.
Highlights of the day include passing through the iconic Berwyn Tunnel and visiting one of the UK’s most picturesque heritage stations, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Welsh countryside.
Adding to the authenticity, participants will enjoy breakfast and lunch with the steam crew, sharing stories, learning from seasoned volunteers, and gaining a deeper appreciation for the dedication and passion that keeps the railway running.

The day also includes a full safety briefing, a guided tour of the MPD sheds, an introduction to traditional signalling, and numerous opportunities to capture unforgettable photographs.
Tim Hines from the Llangollen and Corwen Railway said, “This is a truly special experience and one we’re incredibly proud to offer. It gives people the chance to do something very few ever get to do – not just see a steam locomotive, but actually be part of the crew that operates it. From lighting up in the morning to sharing meals together and running trains through the Dee Valley, it’s a full, authentic day on the railway. The excitement, the teamwork and the atmosphere are something you simply can’t replicate anywhere else.”
With only six places available, this unique experience is expected to generate significant interest from across the UK and beyond.
