The Who frontman reopens Dungeness station

ROGER Daltrey, lead singer in legendary rock band The Who, opened Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway’s rebuilt Dungeness station with RH&DR board chairman, Sir William McAlpine, on August 2, reports Cliff Thomas.

The 15in gauge line’s station at Dungeness, located on a National Nature Reserve, was closed for renovation in winter 2015. The project hit a rough patch when the building contractors leading the project went into liquidation and the project ground to a halt. Fortunately, a replacement firm was found enabling work to continue on the rebuilt station, presenting a radically different appearance from its predecessor. It was ready to be opened for the new season in accordance with the original projected schedule with just a few finishing touches awaiting completion.

Fans of The Who and RH&DR supporters flocked to Dungeness to witness the official reopening by the two long-standing railway enthusiasts. Invited guests then travelled back to New Romney aboard the steam-hauled train.
