CONSTRUCTION of one of the most significant aspects of the Llangollen Railway’s Corwen Central station got underway in early June when excavations began on the foundations for the new signalbox.
Following last month’s news (RM June) that the station project had been boosted by a Welsh Government grant of £128,000, work on the construction of platform 2 and track laying made good progress in June.
The signalbox is a key component in the layout of the site, and excavations down to a depth of 10ft on the northern boundary of the embankment were completed on June 10.

By June 19 the prepared foundation base was fully concreted and awaited the arrival of the contractors to install the reinforced concrete retaining walls that will form a base for the former Weston Rhyn signalbox once its restoration has been completed.
