Weardale and Dartmoor runs ‘Trains to Christmas Town’

Weardale Railways CIC ran ‘Trains to Christmas Town’ during late November and throughout December, in lieu of the copyrighted ‘Polar Expresses’ in the past.

Former BARS/Devon & Cornwall Railways main line Class 31 No. 31452 arrived at Okehampton on November 27 to work the Dartmoor Railway’s Christmas trains. Here, it is on the Crediton end of a ‘Train to Christmas Town’ at Okehampton on December 1. DAVID HUNT

The first trains, at least, were all powered by Class 31s, of which the railway now has several examples. Train operation was supported by Weardale Railway Trust volunteers.

Trains consisted of 10 Mk2 coaches, most in InterCity swallow livery, and by the end of November most tickets on the 100 trains being run had been sold.

The Dartmoor and Weardale railways’ Santa’ trains included a re-enactment of some of the features in the book The Train to Christmas Town, written by Peggy Ellis.
