NETWORK Rail and Gatwick Airport Ltd are working on a major redevelopment of Gatwick Airport’s overcrowded rail interchange.
The project is being supported by the Department for Transport (DfT).
The station currently handles 19 million passengers a year, up from 7.5m in the late-1990s, and was recently described by Civil Aviation Authority chief Andrew Haines as “the weakest link in UK aviation infrastructure”.

A planning application has been submitted for expanded facilities to reduce congestion and improve the passenger experience.
The proposals include doubling the size of the station concourse to improve passenger flow, and provide better connections between the railway station and airport; eight new escalators; five new lifts and four new stairways to improve accessibility and passenger flow; widening of platforms 5 and 6 to reduce overcrowding; better connections to the South Terminal (currently provided by a people mover); improved passenger information; and a new overall roof structure.
