BEAMISH Museum has published its annual tram mileage figures for 2017, with several members of the fleet surpassing the 6,000 miles mark and one topping out at more than 7,600 miles.
The total combined mileage covered by the five cars during the year was 27,550 miles – the equivalent of a trip around the world and a bit more. The average figure for each car was 6,500 miles, compared to the previous average of 5,500 miles.
The increase comes as a result of a rise in visitor numbers and the need to field three cars on days that would previously only have required two trams in service. Four-car days are also still a regular feature during the school holidays.

The highest mileage was recorded by Sheffield Corporation double-deck balcony car No. 264, which notched up 7,650 miles in total. This figure was actually lower than the 8,000 miles originally anticipated; the United Electric Car Company car suffered from armature bearing issues that resulted in two periods out of traffic while the issue was resolved.
