Students play major role in Elsecar event

A YEAR-long project by students at the University Campus of Barnsley College to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War came to fruition on October 31 with the first of a five-day programme of ‘Home From The Front’ special trains at the Elsecar Heritage Railway.

A major task was to locate and arrange the hire of a steam locomotive and carriage to represent the 1918 era.

GWR 0-6-0ST No. 813 and NER auto-coach No. 3453 make up one of the ‘Home From The Front’ specials at Elsecar on October 31. MIKE HADDON

This was found in the GWR 813 Preservation Fund’s Severn Valley Railway-based 0-6-0ST No. 813, and the Embsay-based North Eastern Railway clerestory-roofed bogie coach No. 3453, recently seen paired with the newly restored and unique NER Autocar No. 3170.
