Station regeneration programme brings growth for local economies

RECENT investment of around £5billion in refurbishing, expanding and improving Britain’s railway stations is promoting economic growth in the communities that surround them.

The Rail Delivery Group has highlighted the value of station regeneration projects to the communities they serve. Research by the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) highlights railway stations as natural focal points for growth and regeneration, and says investment in those facilities can help to create jobs, stimulate property development, and reinvigorate local public spaces.

Six stations – Birmingham New Street, Bromsgrove, Burnham-on-Crouch, Swansea, Wakefield Westgate and Wokingham – recently revamped at a combined cost of £812million (£750m of which was spent at New Street) are highlighted as ‘templates’ for successful regeneration.
