SNCF to spend €2.7bn on 100 new high-speed trains

FRENCH national operator SNCF has ordered 100 new double-deck 350kph high-speed trains from Alstom in an order worth €2.7billion, writes Keith Fender.

The new trains will be used to replace older single-deck TGVs, dating from the 1980s/90s.

The new train – branded the ‘Avelia Horizon’ by Alstom – is the first of the Avelia ‘platform’ to be sold in Europe. The design is expected to be offered by Alstom for HS2. The new design incorporates shorter power cars than traditional TGVs – with more space used for passengers in the 200-metre long train.

Alstom is building 28 single-deck ‘Avelia Liberty’ trains, based on the same design for US operator Amtrak, to replace the ‘Acela’ trains between Washington DC, New York and Boston.
