Rother Valley – a railway in waiting

THE Rother Valley Railway has been created to reconnect the Kent & East Sussex Railway (KESR), currently running to Bodiam, with the main line at Robertsbridge, on the Tonbridge to Hastings Line, a distance of two miles.

A new station and platform and other facilities with extensive trackwork have been installed alongside the main line station at Robertsbridge.

Class 03 No. D2112 is owned by Rother Valley Railway Ltd and has been at Robertsbridge since July 2012, where it is seen on July 28. It carries out occasional shunting, but is awaiting the opportunity for more extensive operation once the go-ahead for completion of the line through to the KESR at Bodiam is granted. Track has been laid towards Bodiam with assistance from Network Rail trainees.

Planning approval for the line was granted on March 16, 2017, but it has not been possible to complete the work because two short sections of land in private ownership have yet to be acquired.
