‘Peak’ returns for Devon popular ‘Polar Expresses’

FOLLOWING its successful visit to the Dartmoor Railway last Christmas the Pioneer Diesel Locomotive Group’s (PDLG) Class 45 No. 45060 Sherwood Forester has returned to the Devon railway for the winter’s ‘Polar Express’ trains.

PDLG’s two locos – Class 33 No. 33035 and Class 45 No. 45060 Sherwood Forester – are visiting the Dartmoor Railway over the winter, primarily for the ‘Polar Express’ trains in December. They are seen at Okehampton on November 19, the day after arrival from Barrow Hill. DAVID HUNT

This time around it was accompanied by the group’s ‘Crompton’, No. 33035. The two Sulzers travelled in convoy behind Devon & Cornwall Railways’ Class 31 No. 31452 from their Barrow Hill base, running as 0Z53, the 10.40 to Okehampton, on November 18 (RM December, p93).

The ‘Peak’ has received major attention at Barrow Hill, with its power plant lifted in August, revealing smashed teeth on the main oil pump.
