‘Patriot’ boiler will be completed by HBSS in Butterley

HERITAGE Boiler Steam Services Ltd (HBSS) of Butterley has been awarded the contract to assemble the boiler for new-build Fowler 4-6-0 No. 5551 The Unknown Warrior.

The development brings to an end months of uncertainty over how and where the boiler would be completed.

In May of last year, Crewe-based LNWR Heritage, which has been given the original boiler contract, announced it was withdrawing from third-party contract work, and would no longer be able to complete the ‘Patriot’s’ pressure vessel.

As a result the project team were left with the challenge of not only finding a contractor capable of taking on a big boiler, but also one willing to work with semi-assembled components.

Several companies were approached, with newcomers HBSS being selected from a shortlist of six firms that expressed an interest in the work.
