NETWORK Rail has recently delivered more than £100million of infrastructure renewals and upgrades in 200 projects across the country.
The work took place over the 10-day Christmas and New Year period.
More than 24,000 staff worked a total of 600,000 hours, often in freezing conditions, to build, demolish and replace bridges, install new signalling systems, replace track and points, and deliver new lines for projects such as Crossrail, Thameslink and the Ordsall Chord in Manchester.
Taking advantage of the fact that half the usual 4.5 million daily passengers travel over that period, NR undertook its biggest programme of upgrades. On the Western Region, £30m of work was delivered, including the provision of a new platform for electric suburban trains at Hayes & Harlington station, a platform extension at Slough, remodelling of Maidenhead station, signalling works at Didcot, station works at Swindon, and piling work at Chippenham.
