North Yorks line scoops £4.6million lottery grant

THE North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s (NYMR) £9.2million Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey (YMJ) sustainability project has been boosted by a grant of half the total sum – £4.6million – from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The YMJ project is centred on securing the future of the 180-year-old route by investing in its infrastructure, repairing and replacing bridges, and keeping its rolling stock in tip-top condition.

The NYMR’s newly overhauled Southern ‘Schools’ No. 926 Repton works its inaugural solo timetabled passenger working, the 11.30 Grosmont-Pickering, through Beckhole on August 15. The Maunsell 4-4-0 will need to undertake a 45mph test run to Battersby before being passed fit for the Whitby services. JOHN HUNT

The NYMR already spends around £1m every year on keeping the railway running, but age is starting to catch up in places and there is only so much that ticket revenue can generate.

Individual projects set to gain from the investment include the renewal and repair of the worn-out iron bridges south of Goathland station; provision of a wheelchair-accessible ‘fuss-free access’ carriage in every train; erection of a facility to house up to 40 carriages at Pickering; development of a new focus on caring for and managing the lineside; the creation of an education carriage at Goathland; and provision of a new volunteer hostel at Grosmont to encourage new volunteers, including families and young people.
