THIS year has seen a renaissance of diesel loco-operated trains in different parts of Poland.
The trains have been working both regional and intercity services because of major engineering work in two different locations.
Work at Gorzów Wielkopolski, in western Poland, has meant the regional service from Kostrzyn, on the border with Germany, and Piła, has been effectively cut in half throughout 2017.
Because of a shortage of DMUs most trains at the western end of the line between Gorzów and Kostrzyn have reverted to loco haulage; normally one Class Su42 loco and a single double-deck coach, with up to three locos, have been in use daily.
The engineering blockade is due to continue until at least December, so loco operation is likely to continue as well.
