MID-NORFOLK Railway’s March 16-18 diesel gala was organised by a new team following challenging,
last-minute problems, which had dogged recent diesel events, affecting visitor numbers.
However, in addition to clashing with two other events, severe weather conditions had to be contended with.
Visiting were Class 26 No. D5343 from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway and ‘Crompton’ No. 33035 and ‘Peak’ No. 45060 Sherwood Forester, courtesy of the Pioneer Diesel Locomotive Group. However, the scoop was new DRS Class 88 No. 88008 Ariadne, making the first appearance of the bi-mode type in the Anglia region, on the Saturday and Sunday.

An attractive event was on offer, including a dedicated Hoe Shuttle, from Dereham to Hoe Crossing, with newly restored Class 04 No. D2334 on its MNR debut, with a DMU coach and a brakevan.
Severe winter weather, including falling snow, suddenly made the event a bit more of a challenge as temperatures fell below zero in the strong wind, creating a problem with carriage heating.
