THE Swanage Railway’s main line-registered Class 33 – No. D6515 Lt Jenny Lewis RN – made a rare venture away from its Dorset home on May 10 when it worked ‘The Purbeck Explorer’ railtour from Ealing Broadway to Swanage.
The run was organised to move London Transport Museum’s ‘4-TC’ set from the capital to provide additional air-braked stock for the Swanage Railway’s diesel gala on May 11-13.
It provided a reminder of the period between 1967 and the late-1980s when Class 33s and ‘4-TCs’ dominated operations on the Bournemouth to Weymouth line.
The ‘TC’ returned to London behind Nos. 20007 and 20142 on May 13.
The Class 71A Group-owned No. D6515 made a sad piece of Dorset railway history in May 1977, when it was the last BR locomotive to run from Poole to Wimborne.
