‘Highline’ park plan for disused Camden viaducts

LONDON could soon have its own elevated linear park to rival New York and Paris if a proposal to transform disused North London Line viaducts in Camden gets the go-ahead.

ABOVE and BELOW: Around 800 metres of disused viaducts in north London could be converted into an elevated linear park if Camden Town Unlimited’s proposal gets the go-ahead. The park would provide a new traffic-free route between Camden Town and King’s Cross.

The 800-metre ‘Camden Highline’ would link Camden Town and King’s Cross, providing a new, elevated garden route for pedestrians and cyclists.

The disused railway line crosses eight roads, on seven bridges, and was originally built as part of the North London Railway, now the North London Line, which is part of the London Overground network, as well as a busy cross-city freight route.

Promoter Camden Town Unlimited has been working with Network Rail since early 2016 on the technical aspects of the plan and to assess whether it is feasible to construct the route alongside a busy railway. It would also need to be removable if NR requires the land for future capacity enhancements on the NLL.
