Gelert back in steam as 18-loco opener kicks off Statfold Barn’s new season

STATFOLD Barn Railway’s open day on March 24 presented 18 locomotives in steam, together with the diesel ‘Goose’ railcar and battery-electric Burton and Ashby Light Railway Tram No. 14
in operation.

The significant development of the museum building (ex-Grain Store), unveiled to invited guests during inauguration of Statfold Narrow Gauge Trust on March 10 (RM April), was also opened to a wider audience.

Joining 17 steam locos from the Statfold collection was Welsh Highland Heritage Railway-based Bagnall 0-4-2T Gelert (3050/1953), in steam for the first time since 2013, following overhaul.

After formation of The Gelert Trust at the beginning of 2017, Gelert and a newly constructed Israel Newton boiler moved to Statfold Engineering for contracted overhaul and reassembly. It made a few demonstration runs during the open day, and should enter service on the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway soon.
