SEMI-restored Great Western Railway ‘2884’ class 2-8-0 No. 3814 was expected to have left the North Yorkshire Moors Railway by the time this issue of The RM went to press.
It is bound for the Llangollen Railway, where its stalled restoration will hopefully restart.
The 1940-built heavy freight loco has been the subject of a near single-handed restoration by owner Peter Robinson, who rescued the loco from Barry in 1986.

Over a period of around 15 years Mr Robinson and a small band of helpers carried out a considerable amount of work on the Collett 2-8-0’s bottom end, largely self-financed, including getting the boiler and frames lifted, having the tyres turned, rebuilding the axleboxes, and having a new cab manufactured and fitted.
However, like all restorations, progress was limited by the availability of funds, and having almost completed the rebuild of the bottom end, work stalled and the loco was moved to a siding at the back of the NYMR’s Grosmont works in 2007.
