First diesel-hauled passengers to Broadway

THE Growler Group’s Class 37 No. D6948 was the first diesel to head a passenger train on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway’s new extension to Broadway when it worked the 16.00 departure from Toddington on March 21.

This was the last of four trains for GWSR shareholders and supporters, arriving just before 17.00.

The Type 3 is seen ready to depart on the return, the 1C33 headcode being that of the ‘Cornishman’, the 09.00 Wolverhampton LL-Penzance.

This was the Honeybourne line’s best-known train, which stopped running about 20 months before D6948 was built in 1964 for the Western Region.

The public will have the opportunity for diesel haulage on the extension during the Back to Broadway diesel gala on July 27-29. Picture: PETER SMITH
