Electric trains reach Newbury

ELECTRIC stopping trains are now serving Newbury and local stations to Reading, with services provided by GWR.

Completion of the electrification work fell behind schedule because of cost and technical issues, and plans to electrify on to Bath and Bristol were abandoned.

This means Newbury is now the extent of the electrified section on the Berks & Hants line, with GWR starting electric services on December 31.

At least two all-stations diagrams are now worked by Class 387 EMUs, with other duties formed of ‘Turbo’ units.

More use of 387s is expected in due course.

Electrification has also been completed and energised to Bristol Parkway.
