AS THE £14.5million restoration of Carlisle station roof draws to a close, passengers are once again enjoying lighter, brighter platforms as natural daylight pours in again.
The 1847-built overall roof has been refurbished with safer, easier-to-maintain plastics replacing the previous glass panes, the metalwork is receiving a complete repaint, and new lighting is being installed to illuminate the platforms.
A huge scaffolding access deck was installed above the tracks to provide a safe area for Network Rail contractors to carry out the work without affecting train services.

Chris Atkins, scheme project manager at Network Rail, said: “Passengers are really beginning to see the transformation of Carlisle station as a result of this work.
“The rejuvenated roof will mean a brighter, more airy and cleaner environment, which will enhance the station’s beautiful features.”
Network Rail worked closely with Historic England and Carlisle City Council to plan the refurbishment, while protecting the station’s listed building status. Work is due to be completed, with all scaffolding removed, by February 2018. Much of the 120 tonnes of glass removed from the roof is being recycled into new bottles and windows.
