THE Railway Preservation Society of Ireland’s overhaul of General Motors Class 121 No. B134 has received a major boost after a County Cork firm offered to overhaul the main and auxiliary generators at cost.
Green Net Exports Ltd, of Millstreet, near Mallow, had already received the locomotive’s traction motors for overhaul, owing to its experience in working on similar motors for Iarnród Éireann-Irish Rail. However, the offer to take care of the generators came completely out of the blue.
“I was totally gobsmacked to be honest,” said the RPSI’s Gerry Mooney. “I was in discussion with Green Net’s MD, Patrick O’Sullivan, talking through the programme of work on the traction motors when he literally said ‘While you’re at it, send us the main generator and auxiliary generator and we’ll do them too.’”
