Bumble around Kent freight lines with UK Railtours’ ‘shorter days’

THE latest in UK Railtours’ occasional series of shorter day tours covering rarely-visited freight lines will head to Kent on November 17.

Highlights of ‘The Return of the Short Haired Bumblebee’ tour will be the meandering 11-mile branch from Hoo Junction to Grain, the last remnant of a number of branches on the Isle of Grain, and a visit to Dungeness, in the otherworldly landscape of Romney Marsh.

Departure from London Victoria is at 08.45, with a return by 18.30, offering a civilised day out as the autumn days grow shorter.

UKR’s train will run into the former passenger station site at Grain, where the remains of the short-lived station platform, a modern concrete structure, opened in 1951, but closed a decade later.

Later in the day, attention will turn to the Appledore to Dungeness branch, which hosted a passenger service to New Romney until 1967, and now serves the nuclear power station at Dungeness.
