THE sight of four ‘Castles’ lined up around the former 84E turntable (see main story, left) will be just one of a string of highlights at Tyseley’s 50th anniversary open weekend on September 29-30, which could also include the first public steaming of ‘Jubilee’ No. 45596 Bahamas.
The double-chimney ‘5XP’ is nearing the end of its Heritage Lottery-funded overhaul at Tyseley Locomotive Works, with the final application of BR lined green being undertaken at the time of writing.
The rebuilt tender is being similarly treated following its transfer from the Bahamas Locomotive Society’s (BLS) base at Ingrow on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.

Mechanically, the loco is virtually complete, with the fitting of the blastpipe and smokebox door being among the final tasks to be carried out.
“I anticipate that the loco will be completed next month and will, all being well, be in steam on September 29-30,” said BLS spokesman John Hillier.
“Whether it will be moving, however, will depend upon our ability to get some
light-engine running in before the event.”
It is expected No. 45596 will line up at the event alongside Tyseley’s own ‘Jubilee’ No. 5593 Kolhapur.
