Armenia starts process of modernising its railways

AFTER many years Armenia is beginning to modernise its rolling stock, with new EMUs being supplied by Russian firm Transmashholding.

The railway network in the small former Soviet republic has been operated since 2008 as a concession by Russian Railways subsidiary ‘South Caucasus Railway’ (SCR).

The SCR EP2D EMU leaves Yerevan with a special demonstration train on July 16. The unit is currently only used for weekend services between Yerevan and Gyumri. SHAUN WALLACE

The SCR concession is largely reliant on now life-expired, former Soviet-type ER2 EMUs dating from the 1960s, but since March has introduced a new modern EMU (designated type EP2D).

Transmash has also supplied the EP2D model to Russian operators for use operating Moscow-area commuter services since 2016.
