Rare totem signs in starring role at July Stafford sale

by

FANTASTIC examples of rare British Railways station totem signs take centre stage at Railwayana Auctions UK’s next Stafford auction.

The items come from important collections being dispersed from the Western, Midland and Scottish regions. Neil Booth, of Railwayana Auctions UK, said: “We have an excellent selection of totems, many of which have come in ‘pairs’, and therefore offer a special opportunity for collectors to display the two together.”

There is a pair of Moor Street and Snow Hill signs from Birmingham; Bridge Street and Castle from Northampton; and from Scotland are Newport-on-Tay East and West – the latter making up a series of five classic in-line Scottish names that also include Dundee Tay Bridge, Tayport and Wormit.

Other BR (M) gems include the classic loco shed location name of Woodford Halse, the royally connected Althorp Park and other Northamptonshire ‘jewels’, while South Wales BR (W) St Clears will be making its debut.

Loco items include nameplates from GWR ‘Hall’ Eyton Hall; ‘Peak’ class Grenadier Guardsman; Western Pathfinder; and the rare Class 40 nameplate Media. Headlining the steam list is an LNER ‘A4’ brass engraved worksplate from No. 60028 Sea Eagle, with a rare Class 73 worksplate from one of the six of the ED class to be built at Eastleigh also on offer.

There is the usual array of posters, cabside and smokebox numberplates, and a fantastic array of LNER doorplates, including rare examples from an estate in Norfolk.
