Steam Dreams announces nostalgic holidays by steam

by

The Steam Dreams Rail Co has recently announced an exciting programme of holidays by steam for 2019, including a nine-day trip to the Scottish Highlands, featuring Flying Scotsman, and a six-day Emerald Isle ‘Craic Express’ trip, with the option to see much of the stunning Wild Atlantic Way.

Six weeks ago, driver Ken Fox made a less than impressive climb of the bank towards Stagmount Level Crossing when 461 was steaming poorly. The challenge was laid down to him that a repeat performance like that wouldn’t be tolerated for the ‘Emerald Isle Exporer’ with 85. He need not have worried as 85 stormed up the bank creasting the summit at a reported 37 mph. It is pictured approaching Stagmount Level Crossing. Tues 23.06.15

On Thursday, May 9, the Highlands and Islands inaugural ‘Emerald Manx Explorer’ will set out from London Victoria for a stunning tour, taking in some truly spectacular Highland scenery.

After a quick run up to York we will be joined by the world’s most famous engine – Flying Scotsman – as we make our way along the East Coast Main Line and into Edinburgh.

After a night in Edinburgh we set off the next day, this time double-headed with the newly refurbished 60103 Mayflower as we make our way over the famous Highland main line through the Drumochter Pass and Aviemore.

This will be followed by five nights in the Highlands, with the option to enjoy trips over some of the most scenic lines in Europe, including the Far North Line and the West Highland Line as well as an option to join us on ‘The Jacobite’ over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, before a relaxing stay in the scenic Lake District, returning to London Euston on May 17.

On Friday, September 6, the Emerald Isle ‘Craic Express’ leaves Dublin as we head off behind the magnificent Irish Express passenger locomotive No. 85 Merlin on a route via beautiful countryside to Killarney.

During a two-night stay here, passengers will have the chance to see more of the area by steam, with an optional trip to Cork.

On day three, No. 85 heads the train again for the journey to the poetically famous city of Limerick. Here, the famous No. 4 Tank Engine takes over for the route along the recently rebuilt line through Ennis to the West Coast city of Galway, where passengers will stay for three nights. Again, there is the option to see more of the country by steam with a trip to the pretty town of Westport.

On Wednesday, September 11 the train heads back from Galway to Dublin. Passengers wishing to join this trip from England can book train and ferry transfers through Steam Dreams.
