STATFOLD Barn Railway’s (SBR) September 8 Open Day featured two visiting locomotives.

Both First World War veterans, Greensand Railway Museum Trust’s Baldwin 4-6-0T WDLR No. 778 was appearing at SBR for the first time, while War Office Locomotive Trust’s Hunslet 4-6-0T WDLR No. 303 returned to run in public following its private July 8 launch at SBR.

Both worked on Statfold’s upper field line, initially double-heading a two-coach train with SBR’s Arnold Jung 0-4-4-0 Mallet Djatibarang No. 9 (4878/1930) on the tail.

Unfortunately, Djatibarang No. 9 suffered a failure and the 4-6-0Ts then worked the remainder of the day top-and-tailing the busy trains.

Both Nos. 778 and 303 stayed at SBR to appear in the Statfold At War event before returning to their bases at Leighton Buzzard Railway and Apedale Valley Light Railway, respectively. No. 303 will appear as an exhibit at the November 23-25 Warley Model Railway Exhibition at Birmingham’s NEC.
