The first Gloucs-Warks diesel event to Broadway

THE Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway’s Back to Broadway gala on July 27-29, was the biggest diesel event staged by the railway.

It was the first diesel gala to run over the recently opened northern extension to the Cotswold tourist village of Broadway (RM May, p90).

The mileage for Cheltenham Race Course-Toddington-Broadway is 14 miles.

Broadway station is now in regular use for Gloucs-Warks Railway trains, but with only one platform open at present, photographic possibilities are restricted. Despite the weather attempting to ruin things on Sunday morning, the event was a great success, breaking previous records with more than 2,000 tickets sold.

Over the three days 83 trains were run, covering 1,020 miles, all of which ran more or less to time, with no failures.

For the first time, there were two visiting locos: ‘Warship’ No. D832 Onslaught, from the East Lancashire Railway, and ‘Hymek’ No. D7017, from the West Somerset Railway (WSR).
